Question 1

What is a lightweight live chat widget?

Accepted Answer

A lightweight live chat widget is a fast chat widget that loads quickly and avoids slowing down your website. GhostChat is only ~15KB (gzipped) — dramatically smaller than the 44KB–1.1MB range we measured across competing widgets — so it's much less likely to hurt performance or UX.

Question 2

How do I add live chat to my website?

Accepted Answer

Adding live chat to your website is simple with GhostChat. Add one line of code to your HTML, and you're done. It works on any website — WordPress, Shopify, React, or static sites.

Question 3

Is this the best lightweight live chat widget?

Accepted Answer

If your priority is speed, yes — GhostChat is one of the lightest live chat widgets on the market at ~15KB gzipped. It's also privacy-first with zero tracking and zero cookies. We measured competing widgets between 44KB and 1.1MB, most of them shipping tracking scripts too.

Question 4

Does GhostChat track visitors?

Accepted Answer

No! We don't track or profile your visitors — zero cookies, zero third-party scripts. Your dashboard shows basic conversation stats, but we never collect visitor data. GDPR-friendly by default.

Question 5

Will it slow down my website?

Accepted Answer

It's designed to minimize impact. The widget is only ~15KB (gzipped) and loads asynchronously, so it typically won't affect page speed or Lighthouse for most sites.

Question 6

Does it work on mobile?

Accepted Answer

Yes! The widget is fully responsive and works perfectly on all devices - desktop, tablet, and mobile.

Question 7

Do I need to add it to every page?

Accepted Answer

Add it once to your main layout or template file, and it will appear on all pages automatically.

Question 8

Can I upgrade or downgrade anytime?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can change or cancel your plan at any time. No commitments.

Question 9

Does "unlimited messages" really mean unlimited?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There's no message cap. The only limits are sites, history, and features based on your plan.

Question 10

What is the difference between Free and Pro?

Accepted Answer

Free gives you 1 site, 30-day message history, unlimited messages, and "Powered by" branding. Starter ($5/mo) adds 3 sites, 1-year history, business hours automation, page journey, WooCommerce context and CSV export. Pro ($12/mo) adds 5 seats, 5 sites, 3-year history, auto-translate, webhooks, and the Bot Agent API. Team ($25/mo) removes the "Powered by" branding and adds up to 10 team members, unlimited sites, unlimited history, and custom visitor context. The AI plan ($39/mo) is everything in Team plus the AI assistant — up to 1,000 AI replies/month.

Question 11

Is my data secure?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All data is encrypted and stored securely in Supabase. We never track visitors or use cookies.

Question 12

Can I manage messages from my phone?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Our dashboard is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that you can install on your phone or desktop. Install it on iOS, Android, or desktop for quick access, offline support, and desktop notifications. Manage conversations from anywhere, anytime.

Question 13

Do visitors need to provide personal information?

Accepted Answer

Visitors can optionally share their name and email for follow-up, but it's not required. No sign-ups or login walls — they can start chatting right away.

Question 14

What platforms does it work with?

Accepted Answer

GhostChat works on any website — WordPress, Shopify, React, Ghost CMS, Squarespace, or any HTML page. Just add one line of code.

Question 15

Can I customize the widget appearance?

Accepted Answer

Yes! You can customize colors, position, and styling to match your brand in the dashboard settings.

Question 16

How do I remove the "Powered by" branding?

Accepted Answer

Upgrade to Team ($25/mo), then go to Settings in your dashboard and toggle off the "Show branding" switch. The change takes effect immediately on your site.

Question 17

Where do I set up my webhook?

Accepted Answer

In the dashboard, go to Sites, click the site you want, then scroll to the Webhook section and enter your URL. Webhooks are available on Pro ($12/mo) and up.

Question 18

Where do I find canned responses?

Accepted Answer

Use Canned Responses in the dashboard sidebar, or Settings → Quick replies. In a conversation, type / followed by a shortcut (e.g. /hello) to insert a canned response.

Question 19

Accepted Answer

Click the "Support" link in the footer to open our live chat widget and talk to us directly. We're here to help!
