Import & Export

Bring your content in and take it out.

Importing pages

Click the + button in the dashboard and choose Import Documents, or press I. Drag and drop your files or browse. Accepted formats:

  • Markdown (.md, .markdown)
  • Text (.txt)
  • Word (.docx)

Headings, footnotes and tables from Word come with it. Headings past level 3 come in as level 3. Photos aren't imported yet, from any format.

You can import up to 10 files at a time (5 MB per file, 20 MB total).

Importing spreadsheets

Drop a .csv or Excel (.xlsx) file into the import panel. It becomes a sheet with your data.

From Excel, every worksheet becomes a tab (up to 20) and formulas stay formulas. A formula cDox can't calculate yet comes in as the value Excel last showed. Bold, italic, alignment, column widths and frozen rows come along. Charts, pivot tables, conditional formatting, dropdowns and cell comments aren't imported, and merged cells are split. Rows past 10,000 and columns past ZZ are left out. The older .xls format isn't accepted. When something is left out, the message after the import says what.

Exporting pages

Open a page and click the export button in the header. Four formats available:

  • Markdown (.md)
  • Plain text (.txt)
  • Word (.docx)
  • PDF (.pdf)

Exporting sheets

Open a sheet and click the export button. Sheets export as CSV. If your sheet has multiple tabs, the active tab is exported. Formulas export as their results.

Downloading several at once

Select several pages and sheets on the dashboard and click Download in the selection bar. You get one zip file: pages as Markdown (.md), sheets as CSV with one file per tab and formulas as their results. Folders can't be downloaded this way, so leave them out of the selection.

Note

Importing and exporting work on the web and in the desktop apps. The iPhone, iPad and Android apps are for editing on the go.
