going downhill fast

It was so brilliant one year ago, like - real problems with other platforms - solved, everything really freelancer friendly, not too crowded, strictly verification, high visual design quality in every branch, and... it goes straight downhill slop, lot of 100% scam briefs (technical support says they OK...), board flooded with a.i. "creators" posing as a designers, (i'm not AI hater, I use it myself, they just total beginner poor quality without taste) etc. etc. Great hope and great dissapointment.

A Pattern I've Noticed Across Contra Competitions

In my view, Contra has increasingly become more of a marketing platform for digital products than a platform focused on creating meaningful opportunities for freelancers.

Many of the AI challenges and competitions feel less like talent discovery and more like marketing campaigns. Instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on traditional advertising, companies can sponsor a competition, gain exposure to Contra's community of over 1.5 million users, receive hundreds or thousands of product trials, social media posts, feedback, and user-generated content—all for a fraction of the cost.

The issue isn't that companies market their products; it's that many freelancers join these competitions expecting genuine opportunities, fair evaluation, or career growth. Instead, they often become an audience that helps promote products by signing up, testing platforms, creating showcase projects, and generating buzz.

Competitions can be valuable when they are judged transparently, reward quality consistently, and create real pathways to employment or client work. Without those elements, they risk benefiting sponsors far more than the creators investing significant time and effort into participating.

I have been trying to get in touch with your support team, but I have only received AI-generated messages. When I specifically asked to speak with a human representative, I didn't receive any reply for days. I even followed up through another support conversation, but the same thing happened.

It also seems to be a pattern that you only respond to queries that don't involve much criticism of the platform. As soon as a conversation starts highlighting red flags or concerns about Contra, your team stops replying.

Lack of support

Nice WebApp overall, but hiring freelancers is a nightmare. The freelancers themself are available, but the app limits your messages, verifies them and if you have any minor flaw they delete it. In my case, they deleted my whole chat inbox and I dont even see the names of the people. Basically empty inbox..
Lets not talk about support (instead of helping you, it angers you)

Customer support email is using AI first, It is okay if it only at first. But if I still have issue, clearly follow and found the first offerred, the second email should be responded by a real person.

Worst Freelancer Platform Experience I've Had

One of the most frustrating freelancer platforms i've ever tried.. i moved here because of the marketing around "0% commission," but after looking into the pricing, there are still fees involved depending on how you use the platform, so the advertising felt misleading to me
the bigger issue was the verification process.. my client was ready to pay, i provided Slack screenshots, Upwork history, Legiit order history, and multiple proofs showing we'd been working together for months... my proposal still wasn't approved.. then i was told the same client could be asked for verification again in the future, and even payouts could be reviewed later.. that's just not a practical workflow for freelancers with long-term clients..

support is painfully slow... every reply takes hours, there's no live chat, and each email creates more questions instead of solving the problem..
i've worked on Upwork, Fiverr, and Legiit since 2020, and i've never had a legitimate long-term client relationship questioned over and over like this..
i ended up asking my client to move back because this process was wasting both of our time.. definitely not the professional experience i expected..

Scam Alert ⚠️

Scam Alert ⚠️

I strongly advise people to stay away from this platform. I became a victim of an online investment/task scam through Telegram, WhatsApp, and their related website system.

Initially, they built trust by showing small profits and successful task completion. After that, they repeatedly asked for larger investments and claimed higher returns. Once I deposited money, withdrawal problems started.

Whenever I tried to withdraw funds, my requests were rejected and I was given different reasons such as account issues, verification requirements, and later a huge "security deposit" demand of Rs. 100,000. Additional payments were continuously requested instead of releasing my funds.

Involved Telegram and WhatsApp Profiles:

Website Domains: dybtc.top | btcxgo.com

Ali Raza (Coordinator ID: Ali_Raza0727)

Zainab Malik (Front Desk ID: za_mal21)

Yasmin (WhatsApp Number: +8801610933994)

I lost Rs. 77,800 during this process. I have transaction records, chat history, screenshots, and supporting evidence and have already submitted my complaint to NCCIA Pakistan for investigation.

CRITICAL WARNING:
I have also consulted with official cyber crime advice and law enforcement guidance: Please DO NOT pay any "unfreezing fees" or "security deposits" if you are trapped. These are 100% fake demands to extort more money. Kindly, authorities and the official cyber team need to take immediate and strict action against this network because these scammers are actively operating in the market right now and looting innocent people.

My experience was very disappointing and financially damaging. Please be extremely careful and do proper research before sending money to such platforms.

This platform has gone way downhill

This platform has gone way downhill. It was nice when it started - a platform with no fees that takes no commissions. Clearly too good to be true, and only to build up a userbase. Now it is almost wholly pay-to-play and focuses on no skill, low skill work.

Absolutely abysmal

Absolutely abysmal. I tried to use contra for some of my freelancing contracts given they were high value contracts. David and his team had significant overreach- reaching to my client (after they made a payment) without checking with me first and making them jump onto a call. On their own side- no accountability, no explanation for fees and delays and harassing my client without me on the call. Absolutely unacceptable.

Ridiculous fees + Bait and switch

My employer asked me to sign up on this site because withdrawals were "Free" and "Instant" to Payoneer. That was true for the first month and then out of the blue they added a 4 business day "security review period" and a 2% fee on instant withdrawals. So essentially they want to secure the platform but you can pay them extra not to. According to customer service they sent out an email notifying everyone which I was conveniently unsubscribed from though I am STILL receiving marketing emails... funny how that works in their favor. There are so many other platforms that offer faster payouts without a fee. Its deceptive and a money grab, I'd recommend going to Upwork or using Payoneers invoicing feature instead of this BS. The interface is clunky and confusing and they are constantly trying to force you to use features you don't need. The ONLY appeal was the free instant withdrawal and now I'd rather use Wise and cut out the unnecessary middle man.

Their service is absolutely pathetic.

Their service is absolutely pathetic.
It's especially abysmal for new freelancers.
I was interested in this platform and signed up a few days ago. I spent countless hours building my profile, posting portfolios, and purchasing a paid membership.
But they permanently banned my account for sending messages to a few experienced freelancers through the platform's built-in messaging feature, asking about their experiences.
If this is a violation, why does this feature exist?

not the best for designers, geared towards employers

EDIT for reply:

no, i don't need technical assistance, i understand why you think it's smart to force a designer to reupload every study. I'm telling you that it's a useless feature and good designers won't engage with the redundant work. i'm not recreating my whole case study on your platform that can't even hold the intricacies i hard coded into my actual portfolio, just for a job.

if an employer passes on me because they can't be bothered to click a link to see my full case study, I won't be upset missing out on the opportunity. there are plenty out there, i'm not desperate.

your perspective is skewed because you think your platform is the real tool here and it's not. a good designer doesn't need this site, just like they don't need behance, wellfound, upwork or whatever else that's available. please stop acting like it makes sense to force us to recreate our entire portfolio. it doesn't and no one else requires that to simply apply. it's incredibly narrow minded

-------------------------------------------------------
ORIGINAL REVIEW:

honestly, i wanted to like this. i see the appeal but its operating way too close to a social media account and not a job board.

it has virtually NO privacy for designers. i only want my case studies viewed by those i'm interested in roles for, not the whole word to view.

but this platform FORCES you to keep things public and interact with this engagement feature. it's also a little weird it makes you recreate your entire portfolio before allowing you to actually apply. I spend hours on my portfolio outside of your silly little website. i dont want to spend more time recreating it there too just because you want me to. I feel i just got half way through uploading and it being buggy and slow where I started asking myself what I was even doing. Make it easier not harder for us? if we dont want to reupload all our shit onto your platform, don't force us?

also its rather expensive too. 30 a bucks a month when i can source most roles myself on linkedin. pay all that and still not even get privacy or settings? no thanks

Hi there!

Thank you for this feedback and for sharing insights into your experience on Contra.

The reason that we ask you to upload your work to our platform before applying to Jobs is so clients are able to view your work when considering your application. This is for the benefit of the independent as a profile with no work displayed will not be considered by clients when there are countless profiles on Contra that do display work.

Contra is a creative network to share and inspire on top of a Job network, which is why your work is displayed publicly. I definitely can see why a private profile would be useful though, and I have passed that feedback along to our product team.

If you ever do decide to come back to Contra, feel free to reach out to hello@contra.com and we would be happy to assist.

Frustrating experience — rejected job post with no clear explanation

I wanted to post a job for a freelance SEO specialist. The first thing I didn’t like is that you can’t do anything — even browse the talent database — without registering, which is already annoying. Why would I create an account on a platform where I might not even find what I’m looking for?

Still, I went through the registration process and decided to post the job. I wrote the description using their own AI bot. However, the budget selection was very inconvenient — I couldn’t find a way to set an hourly rate. I personally find it much easier to work with hourly pricing rather than big fixed numbers.

In the end, I spent my time creating the job post, only for it to be rejected without any clear explanation. Formally, they wrote something like “check this, this, and this,” but in reality there was no clarity on what exactly I did wrong or what I needed to change for the post to be approved — especially considering the job description was created using their own AI tool.

After this experience, I don’t want to come back to the platform. It’s easier to return to the websites I used before, where the process is transparent and clear. Contra definitely needs to improve their moderation process and overall usability.

Just a few jobs which you pay first to see

You apply for jobs there is zero feedback on all of them. Ok that's fine, it happens on most freelancing platforms but the other platforms show you the number of applicants before you even apply and afterwards. The number of jobs is not that much for my niche (Branding Design), you could reload the page a number of times only to see a new job days later. I freelance on Upwork, I have to filter so that I only see the jobs I want. Unfortunately you pay first to view few jobs that probably have a lot of competition (because the number of applicants is unknown)
