VPS snapshots

Snapshots that never leave your provider account

A snapshot job calls your provider's own API — a DigitalOcean snapshot, a Hetzner image, an EC2 AMI, a GCE Machine Image. The image is created inside your account and stays restorable from your provider's console whether or not VPS Snaps is still in the picture. All we keep is the snapshot ID and the run that made it.

  • DigitalOcean, Linode and Google Cloud connect over OAuth, and Google Cloud keylessly too; Azure with a Microsoft sign-in. Hetzner and Vultr take an API token, AWS a scoped IAM key.
  • Retention prunes old images after each successful run. On EC2 we also delete the EBS snapshots behind a deregistered AMI — the usual source of storage you keep paying for and forget about.
  • Vultr keys are IP-allowlisted by default, so setup shows you the address to allow instead of letting the key fail silently at 2am.
  • Every run is logged, and your team shares the workspace as owners, admins and members, so the backups outlive whoever set them up and an auditor's question has an answer.

Database backups

pg_dump and mysqldump, on a schedule you set

Point a job at any SSH-reachable host and VPS Snaps runs the dump tool already installed there. Output is gzipped on the server and uploaded by the server straight into your bucket as it is produced — never staged on its disk, never passed through us, and hashed on the way out so the run records a checksum of exactly what landed.

What runs on your server

pg_dump -h 127.0.0.1 -p 5432 -U app acme_prod | gzip
  • PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB, using the client binaries the host already has — no extension to install, no daemon to run.
  • Schedules run hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, or on a fixed interval in minutes — anchored to your timezone, so a 02:00 job stays at 02:00 across a DST change instead of drifting an hour.
  • Passwords and SSH keys are sealed with AES-256-GCM before they reach our database, and are never displayed again after you save them.

A crontab line and a dump script work the day you write them. Six months later they are a web of scripts across servers, and nobody is sure which still run. Replacing yours? How the two compare.

Not on the Free plan

Database backups need Standard or higher. The Free and Starter plans cover provider snapshots, file backups, and the Agent — the button below takes you to a plan that can actually run this.

Alex Morgan
“VPS Snaps gave us one place to manage backups across DigitalOcean, AWS, and a few standalone servers. We can schedule provider snapshots, database dumps, and file backups without maintaining a bunch of separate scripts, and the run logs make it easy to confirm everything actually completed.”

Five more things it backs up

Files, Docker stacks, the apps a scan finds, Kubernetes namespaces, and machines with no way in from the internet. Each has its own page with the detail and the places it stops.

  • File backups

tar over SSH for the paths you list, streamed to your storage as it's produced. Exclude patterns keep node_modules and caches out, and a path that's gone is skipped with a warning, not a failed run.

    File backups
  • Docker backups

Each named volume read through a throwaway container and archived on its own, with the compose files and container inspect output alongside. Standard plan and up.

    Docker backups
  • Application detection

A scan finds WordPress, Laravel, Craft CMS, Ghost and Nextcloud sites, reads the database connection from their own config, and offers the paired file and database jobs.

    Supported apps
  • Kubernetes

Workload manifests for the namespaces you choose, plus a CSI snapshot of each PVC where the cluster supports one. Custom resources from operators aren't included.

    Kubernetes backups
  • The Agent

One container inside your network opens an outbound connection and waits for work: no inbound port, no public IP. It runs file, database and Docker jobs and uploads to your storage itself.

    How the agent connects
  • Not sure which you need?

Connect a server and scan it. VPS Snaps lists what it finds and offers the jobs to back it up, and the Free plan covers one server.

Your backups land in storage you own

VPS Snaps has no storage of its own to sell you. Add an S3-compatible bucket with your own credentials, or connect your Google Drive, and every archive we create is written there — under your retention policy, in your account, on your bill.

Add more than one and point different jobs at different destinations — a hot bucket for nightly dumps, a cheaper cold one for monthly archives. Every destination has a connection test you can run whenever you like, and the list shows when each one last passed, so a rotated key turns up as a failed test rather than as a missing backup.

When something does go wrong

Backups are half of it. These are the other half, and the full list is on the features page.

A replacement server on demand
Recover now builds a new server on your own DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Vultr, Linode, AWS EC2, AWS Lightsail, Azure or Google Compute Engine account, from its snapshot or from its backups, software included.
Failover on any cloud
When a server stops answering, its traffic moves to the recovery server: by reserved or floating IP where your cloud has one, or by your DNS on Cloudflare, which works on every cloud.
Know it's down, with the way back
Uptime monitors for sites, ports and scheduled jobs confirm an outage before alerting, name the server's newest backup, and publish a status page. On paid plans.
Your DNS zones, backed up
Every record in a Cloudflare zone, kept in your own storage as a BIND file too. A restore previews what differs and writes back only that.
Alerts on five channels
Email plus Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, and Discord — on success, on failure, and on a job that missed its schedule entirely.
Team access with roles
Invite your team into a shared workspace as owner, admin, or member, so backups outlive whoever set them up.

Built to hold the keys to your servers

To take a backup, VPS Snaps holds your provider tokens and SSH keys. This is how they're protected, and what we choose not to hold at all.

We never store your backups
Archives are written to your own bucket or Google Drive. Most go there straight from your server or cloud account; the few that stream through our worker are held in memory and never written to disk.
Credentials encrypted at rest
Provider tokens and SSH keys are encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The key lives outside the database, and a credential is decrypted only in memory, when a job runs.
Two-factor on every plan
TOTP two-factor sign-in with backup codes, bcrypt-hashed passwords, and every query scoped to your workspace. The same on Free as on Agency.
A published DPA
The GDPR data processing agreement is public, with every subprocessor and what each one handles, so you can check it before you sign up.
Scott Matarazzo
“Your backups never depend on VPS Snaps, or on me: they are plain files in your own storage and snapshots in your own cloud account, usable without us.”
