ImagePadding

ImagePadding

is an option for graphics functions that specifies what absolute extra padding should be left for extended objects such as thick lines and annotations such as tick and axis labels.

Details

  • Settings for ImagePadding are given in printer's points.
  • Padding specified by ImagePadding is left inside the region defined by ImageSize, but outside the region defined by PlotRange and PlotRangePadding.
  • Possible settings for ImagePadding are:
  • Noneleave no padding
    Allleave enough padding for all objects that are present
    mthe same padding on all sides
    {{left,right},{bottom,top}}different padding on different sides
  • With PlotRangeClipping->True, objects such as thick lines are still clipped at the edge of the plot range region, even if image padding has been specified. Annotations such as tick and axis labels are not clipped in this case.

Basic Examples  (4)

Leave no padding outside of the plot range:

Wolfram Language code: Graphics[{Thickness[.3], Pink, Circle[]}, ImagePadding -> None, Frame -> True]

Leave enough padding for all objects that are present:

Wolfram Language code: Framed[Graphics[{Thickness[.3], Pink, Circle[]}, ImagePadding -> All, Frame -> True], FrameMargins -> 0]

Specify the same padding for all sides in printer's points:

Wolfram Language code: Framed[Graphics[{Thickness[.3], Pink, Circle[]}, ImagePadding -> 40, Frame -> True]]

Specify different padding on each side:

Wolfram Language code: Framed[Graphics[{Thickness[.2], Pink, Circle[]}, ImagePadding -> {{40, 10}, {20, 5}}, Frame -> True]]

Scope  (4)

Thick lines and labels outside of the bounding box can be clipped without ImagePadding:

Wolfram Language code: Framed[Graphics3D[{EdgeForm[Directive[Thickness[0.1], Pink]], Cuboid[]}, Axes -> True, AxesLabel -> {x, y, "z-axis"}, ImagePadding -> None], FrameMargins -> 0]

Leave enough padding for labels:

Wolfram Language code: Framed[Graphics3D[{EdgeForm[Directive[Thickness[0.1], Pink]], Cuboid[]}, Axes -> True, AxesLabel -> {x, y, "z-axis"}, ImagePadding -> All], FrameMargins -> 0]

Specify the same padding for all sides in printer's points:

Wolfram Language code: Framed[Graphics3D[{EdgeForm[Directive[Thickness[0.1], Pink]], Cuboid[]}, Axes -> True, ImagePadding -> 30], FrameMargins -> 0]

Specify different padding on different sides:

Wolfram Language code: Framed[Graphics3D[{EdgeForm[Directive[Thickness[0.1], Pink]], Cuboid[]}, Axes -> True, ImagePadding -> {{40, 40}, {10, 10}}], FrameMargins -> 0]

Properties & Relations  (2)

ImagePadding is defined within ImageSize:

Wolfram Language code: Table[Framed[Graphics[{Pink, Disk[]}, Frame -> True, ImagePadding -> k, ImageSize -> 100, FrameTicks -> {{{-1, 1}, None}, {{-1, 1}, None}}]], {k, {10, 20, 30}}]

ImageMargins is defined outside of ImageSize:

Wolfram Language code: Table[Framed[Graphics[{Pink, Disk[]}, Frame -> True, ImageMargins -> k, ImageSize -> 70, FrameTicks -> {{{-1, 1}, None}, {{-1, 1}, None}}]], {k, {10, 20, 30}}]
