A plane graph consists of a graph together with a specified planar graph embedding, so its vertices and edges are drawn in the plane and any two edges meet only at common endpoints (Harary 1994, p. 103).
A planar graph is an abstract graph that admits such an embedding, without specifying one. A drawing with crossings may therefore represent a planar graph, but it is not a plane graph.
