…recalled System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient, and therefore PowerShell's Send-MailMessage, throws with the server's text gone and the message rendered in the operating system's language. Captured against a local SMTP server answering with the real refusal: on a Polish system it reads Uwierzytelnianie nie powiodlo sie. That matters more than the exact string. A Windows administrator sees no 535, no 5.7.139 and nothing they can search - in their own language - which is why this gets reported as a wrong password and why WINDOWS-SERVER.html gets 194 impressions from people asking the wrong question.

System.Net.Mail.
To wazniejsze niz sam ciag znakow.
