  38. Install Hammerspoon

    brew install --cask hammerspoon
  39. Install the keyboard remapper: Karabiner-Elements

    brew install --cask karabiner-elements

Open it once and approve what macOS asks for: the driver extension (System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions) and Input Monitoring for karabiner_grabber and karabiner_observer. Karabiner owns the Caps Lock → Control remap, so leave Caps Lock unmapped in System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Modifier Keys.

  40. Clone this repo and run make to install:

    git clone git@github.com:kelvinst/dotfiles.git
    cd dotfiles
    make install
  41. Install the hs command-line tool, so Hammerspoon can be driven from a shell instead of its GUI console. It is a symlink into the app bundle — the same one hs.ipc.cliInstall() would make from the console, just pointed at ~/.local/bin (already on PATH) so no sudo is needed:

    ln -sf /Applications/Hammerspoon.app/Contents/Frameworks/hs/hs ~/.local/bin/hs

It only answers once Hammerspoon is running a config that does require("hs.ipc") — hammerspoon/init.lua here does. Restart Hammerspoon after make install to pick that up, then check it:

killall Hammerspoon; open -a Hammerspoon; sleep 2; hs -c 'hs.processInfo.version'
  42. Make Hammerspoon the default browser, so links open in the Chrome window on the focused aerospace workspace instead of wherever Chrome last had focus. macOS will ask for confirmation:

    hs -c 'hs.urlevent.setDefaultHandler("http")'

The one call covers https too — Hammerspoon changes both schemes together, so a second command for https would only prompt you again for a change already made.

This routes every app's links through Hammerspoon, not just one. Undo it in System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser.

  43. Free ⌥F3 for the window hints. alt-f3 drops a letter on every window of the visible aerospace workspaces, on both monitors (accordion stacks flip to tiles while the overlay is up); type a letter to focus that window, or Esc to back out. macOS binds ⌥F3 to Mission Control by default and swallows it before Hammerspoon sees it, so turn that shortcut off (or move it off ⌥F3) in System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Mission Control. Plain F3 stays free for Homerow. Hammerspoon also needs Accessibility permission (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility).

Feel free to fork and clone it from there. This is under MIT license, do what you want, just give me some credit for it. 😁
