ClawPilot

Chrome OpenClaw TypeScript License Security

Bring the open web into the run.

ClawPilot is a browser-side command center for OpenClaw. It gives operators a focused Chrome Side Panel for capturing page context, reviewing scope, and sending a deliberate instruction to a local Gateway. The repository includes the high-fidelity product prototype and a production-oriented Manifest V3 extension bundle.

Why ClawPilot

OpenClaw can operate across channels, tools, skills, and browser sessions. ClawPilot narrows that power into the moment where browser context is created: the tab you are reading, the text you highlighted, the screenshot you want to explain, or the group of sources you want to compare. The interface keeps the operator in the loop through visible context, explicit scope, and a clear trust boundary.

What is included

Surface Purpose
Chrome Side Panel Persistent command desk alongside the active webpage.
Context capture Current page metadata, selected text, visible screenshot, or active-window tabs.
OpenClaw bridge Configurable Gateway URL, endpoint path, and local bearer token support.
Approval language Clear boundary: no silent form submissions, messages, or writes.
Settings page Local configuration for Gateway connectivity.
Product prototype Responsive Signal Desk interface for desktop and mobile exploration.
Release bundle Loadable ZIP with manifest.json at the archive root and generated extension icons.

Architecture

ClawPilot architecture

The extension uses a Manifest V3 service worker for Gateway requests and Side Panel orchestration. The Side Panel requests browser context through Chrome's user-initiated APIs, then sends a JSON request to the configured OpenClaw-compatible endpoint. Tokens remain in Chrome extension storage and are only attached to the configured Gateway request.

Install the extension locally

Download the release archive from the repository's Releases page, unzip it, and open chrome://extensions in Google Chrome. Enable Developer mode, choose Load unpacked, and select the extracted folder that directly contains manifest.json. Pin ClawPilot, open a webpage, and click the extension icon to open the Side Panel.

Open Settings from the Side Panel and confirm the Gateway URL, endpoint path, and optional bearer token. The default target is http://127.0.0.1:18789/v1/chat/completions; adjust it if your OpenClaw deployment exposes a different compatible path.

Development

The product prototype is a React + Vite static frontend. The extension itself is dependency-free browser JavaScript and can be loaded unpacked directly from extension/ during development.

pnpm install
pnpm check
pnpm build
node --check extension/background.js
node --check extension/content.js
node --check extension/sidepanel.js
node --check extension/options.js

To rebuild the extension archive and icon set:

python3 tools/build_extension.py

Permissions and security

ClawPilot follows a least-privilege model. It uses activeTab for user-initiated capture, scripting for reading a selection, storage for local settings, sidePanel for the command surface, contextMenus for explicit actions, and limited localhost access for the default Gateway. Remote host access is optional and not granted automatically. See SECURITY.md for the threat model and reporting process.

Product direction

ClawPilot's visual system is Signal Desk: deep ink for operational focus, signal orange for active intent, acid lime for healthy/ready states, warm cream for captured context, and IBM Plex Mono telemetry alongside Space Grotesk display type. The design is asymmetric and editorial rather than a generic centered SaaS dashboard.

Roadmap

The next production increments are Gateway WebSocket session streaming, authenticated device pairing support, an approval audit trail, automated Chrome extension tests, and Chrome Web Store listing materials.

Contributing

Please read CONTRIBUTING.md before opening a pull request. Changes that add permissions, transmit new categories of browser data, or introduce a new Gateway endpoint must include a security note and user-facing explanation.
