Try restarting your terminal/command prompt, the new alias ns might need that. Also run tns --version and see what that returns, you might have a local copy of nativescript in the current working directory.

Do you have a lesser version installed on your node_modules

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/7449484/node-npm-local-install-override-global-install

To be sure run (from your project root)
npm uninstall -s nativescript
rm -rf node_modules
npm install -g nativescript
npm install

This will remove the cli from your package.json and your node_modules
As well as reinstall latest version globally then reinstall all your modules

If you're not running this from inside a project maybe you're inside a project without noticing?
Check. If you have a node_modules folder or a package.json file on your current directory

Since you've got a tns command, it is probably worth running which tns to discover where it's running this from. If it doesn't match /Users/xxx/.npm-global/bin, then you've got a PATH issue that you'll need to resolve in your shell environment.
