I've been developing fully open source software (FOSS) for years. It's been very rewarding mentally and emotionally but unfortunately doesn't feed me.

For example, I single-handedly maintain tqdm, a world top-20 Python package valued at ~$55k. If you program in Python you've probably used it. So far I've only raised-amount in one-off donations. Thanks to the awesome community, I haven't given up yet.
