about the sentence: "At one end of the trie, there are all of the particular pieces of data that describe state (value nodes)." is this valid also for the code contained in a smart contract deployed on the blockchain?

yes, sorta. A "value" is an array containing [nonce,balance,storageRoot,codeHash] -- storageRoot is actually *another* trie which contains the smart contract code.
