Output of awesome --version:

awesome v4.3 (Too long)
 • Compiled against Lua 5.3.5 (running with Lua 5.3)
 • D-Bus support: ✔
 • execinfo support: ✔
 • xcb-randr version: 1.6
 • LGI version: 0.9.2

(Arch Linux Community repo version)

How to reproduce the issue:

The taglist can display tags with a variety of filters and from various sources. The most common use-case is to display the tags for a current screen, but it is possible to display tags from another screen, or to display them based on arbitrary conditions. When doing this, the taglist can sometimes fail to update when the information it's displaying changes.

I encountered this while using awesome-sharedtags, but it comes up as soon as you start messing with the source parameter on the taglist.

Actual result:

Currently, you can call _do_taglist_update() by hand. However, this is undocumented and not part of the public API. Future changes could break any config that relies on it.

Expected result:

I would prefer a publicly-available and documented API for updating a taglist manually. This could be as simple as renaming and documenting _do_taglist_update, or it could involve a wrapper function around it.

If this is something that would be accepted, I would be happy to work up a PR for review.
