Friends and colleagues! I’m leaving -- and I am so excited to share what I’ll be doing next. It is part sabbatical, part business, and all my very own: .

Our electronic devices increasingly reveal private and sensitive things about us. You shouldn’t have to reveal any of it to border officers to come back into the United States. The Protecting Data at the Border Bill would secure our privacy.

Like, here is one example. The State of Colorado paid to write election auditing software for them, it was licensed AGPLv3, and the Colorado Department of State kept copyright ownership:

Most interesting use of perhaps ever (in California bill on open-source paper ballot voting systems, more public funding, if "exclusively" copyleft, and developed in public); I imagine "exclusively" has to preclude use of a CLA by the vendor?

Trivia/idle questions: Overall, slightly under 1% GDP ad spend; what explains substantial variation? Why Slovenia outlier? Significant correlation is from news/magazine rather than TV/radio; what if digital were broken out? What if superset of ad (marketing?) spend considered?

Suggestive that ad spend decreases reported life satisfaction, independent of business cycle (27 European countries, 1980-2011). Much more research needed, but aligns with my biases (advertising is pollution, not an internet problem, tax it all).

Hard not to be impressed. Would enjoy objective comparison on dimensions of convenience, freedom, security for dev+personal stuff between Chromebook+Crostini, Windows+WSL, Macbook, GNU/Linux as shipped by Purism or System76, Qubes [as set up by expert if not shipped by vendor?]

Unfortunately neither FirmwareScanner nor Lumen are themselves open source (very happy to find out otherwise) but I guess typical reviewers won't care.

Also I would love to see a detailed readout of pre-installed app behavior in device reviews, perhaps using FirmwareScanner and Lumen as did. Does any review pub, blogger, or other already do this? AFAIK typical reviews only point out visible bloatware.

... have plenty of harmful preinstalls per the analysis, (2) Some Windows (not open source) vendors have pre-installed all kinds of harmful apps. Strikes me whether operating system OSS or not is orthogonal to device vendor behavior. But would love to read analysis on this point!
