This directory contains AI agent tools and skills for working with the USWDS repository.
Skills are task-specific workflows that can be invoked by AI coding assistants. They encode USWDS-specific knowledge, conventions, and judgment.
Accessibility standards and verification for agents changing USWDS components (ARIA, focus, keyboard, AT announcements, a11y tests). Complements uswds-code-review gate 16: review routes AT behavior here instead of concluding it from the diff.
Usage:
/uswds-accessibilitySee skills/uswds-accessibility/SKILL.md.
A judgment-based code review skill that reproduces the calibration of the USWDS core review team. It:
- Enforces 16 specific gates (size, dependencies, test coverage, sanitization, etc.)
- Distinguishes personal preference from what all downstream consumers inherit
- Routes decisions to specialists (accessibility, breaking changes, new API surface)
- Stays silent on formatting, naming, and other tooling-owned concerns
- Uses the team's actual review voice and severity levels
Usage:
# Review a PR
/uswds-code-review 6767
/uswds-code-review https://github.com/uswds/uswds/pull/6789
# Review current branch
/uswds-code-reviewSee skills/uswds-code-review/SKILL.md for full documentation and VERIFICATION.md for test cases.
Installation:
The skill is automatically available if you have this repo cloned and your AI assistant is configured to use repo-local skills. For manual installation:
ln -s /path/to/uswds/.agents/skills/uswds-code-review ~/.claude/skills/uswds-code-reviewCodeRabbit reviews every PR into develop. It is configured in .coderabbit.yaml at the repo root, and the two systems divide the work:
| CodeRabbit | skills/uswds-code-review |
|
|---|---|---|
| Runs | On every PR, automatically | When a maintainer invokes it |
| Sees | The diff, the linked issue, the linters | The whole repo, gh, the test suite, the ADRs |
| Good at | Gates 2, 3, 9–13, 16a, and flagging 14 — the sanitization, token, and PR-hygiene rules | Gates 1, 4, 6–8, 15, 16b, classifying 14 — and verifying a test actually fails on develop (gate 5) |
| Output | PR comments and a walkthrough | A local markdown report, cached in .review-cache/ |
references/gates.md stays canonical. .coderabbit.yaml carries only the subset a bot can apply to a diff — when a gate changes there, check whether the YAML's path_instructions or pre_merge_checks need the same edit.
CodeRabbit also reads AGENTS.md (auto-detected), references/uswds-anchors.md, and skills/uswds-accessibility/SKILL.md as review criteria, so keeping those accurate improves its reviews directly.
These tools are designed for use with AI coding assistants that support the skill/agent pattern. They assume:
- Node is installed. See
.nvmrc ghCLI authenticated touswds/uswds- Working directory is the USWDS repo root
See AGENTS.md in the repo root for general agent guidance.
