I got a simpler test working on an Ubuntu trusty system, instead of Debian stretch.

Here are some of the differences I noted in the configure, to summarize...

pc VS unknowen system type.
no gawk, found mawk.
gcc option to accept ISO C99... -std=gnu99
Some extra steps done for one build.
No mt, use dd.
